Artist's Statement: 'I love Creation and every day I see more ideas than I can ever capture, constantly inspired by the colour, texture, and beauty around us. Fabric is one of my passions, and to say the least, I am an enthusiastic collector! Ethnic textiles are of particular interest to me, and I have the utmost admiration for the many men and women around the world who produce wonderful handwork, often for little recognition or remuneration. Although enjoying sewing and creating art of other kinds, Quilting is top of my list, and is my chosen medium for this exhibition. All facets of quilting are very special to me; from the traditional hand pieced quilts that tell the history of our forebears, often stitched from flour bags and cherished fabric scraps, to the awesome contemporary fabric artworks of today. Having lived in Fiji, Africa, and mostly New Zealand, and enjoyed many wonderful times in Australia I found my inspiration in the wonderful indigenous patterns of these lands and have endeavoured to capture the “flavours'' of these lands. The wall-hanging “TransTasman Ties'' shows the close connection we have with our Aussie mates. It has been a pleasure to produce these pieces for your viewing, I hope you enjoy them.' Thank you, Donna Armstrong |
