Artist Profile: Maria is a contemporary artist working in mixed media including mosaic work. Known for her Pioneer Park toilet block mosaic design, a colourful work incorporating birds, fish and landscape, themes which often appear in her paintings. Maria’s love of texture and ground copper with an aged patina base gives the work its signature and her wonderful use of colour gold and copper leaf give the paintings a distinct Pacific feel. This exhibition is titled “Neuseeland Natur” as some of these works will be heading to Germany next year to be part of an exhibition with German artist Olaf Meixner at Defacto Art Lubeck. New Zealand was called the land of birds, and with good reason. We had so many species, and now sadly many are extinct or are on the endangered list. I am looking at New Zealand birds and placing them on vessels created by man. Vessels that may replace their natural habitat which we often destroy for commercial gain or because species we have unwisely introduced have endangered fragile eco systems. The natives are often relocated to pest free offshore islands to save them or artificial nesting boxes are built to encourage them to breed in new locations. Works in private collections in New Zealand, Australia, Great Britain, America, Germany, Holland, Hong Kong, Japan and Norway, Maria was invited and joined the Saatchi Gallery website 2006 A working member of both the Nelson Suter Art Society and the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts.
